sausages!

Now that Claydons is shortly to close (or maybe it already has as I don't visit that often) does anyone know where I can buy Braughing sausages locally? Was surprised to find the fish shop selling them!

You can buy Braughing sausages at the shop opposite the Bengeo Club in Bengeo Street. They sell them in packs of 8 and the price fluctuates between £2 and £2.50 per pack despite all being the same weight.

I was talking to John in the fish shop just before Christmas and I asked him the same question. He suggested that he might ask Farrow and Farrow to sell them when he closed. I don't know what the outcome was. In the meantime, you can buy them at Pearce's Farm Shop on the A10 just north of Ware. They are in various size packs. Otherwise try http://www.braughingsausage.com and they deliver direct.

I don't think Rooster spotted my earlier posting. For your info Rooster,Bengeo Street is about half a mile from your pub.

Yup, that's true. He's very kindly passed on the mantle to us. We should have them in by mid-week refridgeration and raw meat stoage willing.

are they a type of sausage, or a brand with multiple varieties? Best sausages I've ever had a re Kangaroo in Australia. Such a rich, gamey taste. Shame nowhere in teh UK sells them. I doubt even our good friends Farrow & Farrow can source them, although I'm tempted to lay down the gauntlet!

They are a sausage made to a secret ancient recipe in a butchers in the Medieval Village of Braughing.

They are a legendary, locally produced sausage, made in Braughing. They are just sausages, one simple design, made to the recipe handed down by generations of Braughing banger butchers. (I just made that up.) In a world of mass produced, sausage factory muck, it's good to be able to support locally produced sausages that taste like sausages.

I would not be surprised if the recipe has been handed down by several generations, as the butchers has been there for years. I certainly have been eating the bangers for at least 30 years. (obviously not non-stop![:I])

Aarrgh! Questionsquestionsquestions! And I'm still in the office so can't have a gin to assist me![V] Victor, we'll be making an order to our Spanish supplier later on this week and shall be ordering the mini chorizos. They don't do the Queso de Burgos (though do de Serrat & de Tou) so bear with us while we investiate futher. Sister, John (Claydons) has given White's the head's up about our taking over the Braughin supply so as long as they cut us the same deal as they did for John, then we'll be charging £2.20 per pound (the same price as Claydons). They will be pre-wrapped due to the raw meat Vs cooked/dairy rules. At this stage we are not planning on freezing them prior to selling. Hope this helps. [:)]

Damn long half mile!!! And it's uphill if you walk. If you drive (ring road etc., permitting) it is more like three miles! Claydons is approx half a mile walking from here. The alternative place for purchase was for anyone not in the Bengeo area and those who travel up and down the A10 on a regular basis.

Are there any other readily available in the area you would suggest, local or not?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, personally I would rather have an opinion based on a product’s innate taste merits rather than where it was manufactured.

braughing, mediocre sausage at best, much better sausages out there. imo It is obviously a matter of taste, but I don't like highly seasoned sausages, I like traditional English sausages, which Braughing are, I also really like the way they aren't full of fat when you cook them. I don't just like them because they are local, I am quite fussy about sausages. but the fact they are local is a bonus

FarrowandFarrow, great news about the Braughing Sausage supply! Have you got them in yet? Braughing Sausages are fab! Broad Oak farm are pretty good too, but not quite in the Braughing sausage league!

Agreed. For cassoulets I'd never use braughins as the flavour isn't strong enough (hence the freezer stuffed with toulouse!) However, for bangers & mash, breakfast or Toad, Braughin's are perfect.

I would love to run a blind tasting so that people could assess the merits of Braughing sausages without their local loyalty getting in the way. I just don't understand what's so good about them. My family have never liked them much either. If it's a traditional banger you're after, the Duchy of Cornwall ones available in most large supermarkets are better than Braughing and are made with organic free range British pork. Braughing sausages are not made with free range pork. Anyway, it might be of interest to some of you reading this thread to know that you can get Braughing sausages for lunch at the Waterside with horseradish mash, £8.25 or the Old Cross Tavern, with home-cooked bubble and squeak and onion gravy for an unbeatable £4.95.[:)]
