Christmas Lights

I see that Wiggintons have put up their moving raindeers (mid-November, is that the normal time?) and we have that blue thing in O2. Any other lights gone up recently?

There is a house on the edge of Sele Farm, one of the last houses in Hertford on the B1000, that usually puts its lights up in November, but I haven't been past recently to see if they are there yet.

The house at the bottom of Port Hill has still got their lights up from last Christmas. Does this count?

I wonder if 'local celebrity' Jade Goody will be turning on Hertford's Christmas lights this year? [:D]

Well, I hope he is careful where he parks his sleigh or the parking attendants will pounce.

Where does a parking attendant park when they go to work [;)]

The lights (and nodding reindeer) are out along the front of the shops on the Avenue in Bengeo.

The tree is up in Salisbury Square! Not the best move in my opinion. There was loads of problems last year with the lights being nicked and damage to the tree. Putting it up this early almost guarentees it'll be a wreck by December. It's a bit small as well. Maybe its a decoy to get the tree bashing out of any ASBO's system before the REAL tree comes along! Outside The White Hart as well - that's just asking for trouble!

When will they ever learn? Although where is there a good site? Maybe an ideal site for at least a temp CCTV over the Crimle Sesson at least. Though not to be plonked like a fairy on top of the tree [;)]

First the good news. This is not the tree we expected, being about ten foot less than ordered. Hopefully replaced before the lights arrive. There is nowhere else in town this will go. Three options. 1. Parliament Square - for everything you say about Salisbury Square say this one with trumps. 2. Castle Gates - unfortunately conflicts with Garden of Remembrance. 3. By Samuel Stone - the pit is so close to the pavement the tree would be safer in the middle of the road. I and a few others have looked at so many options. It comes down to Salisbury Square. The town deserves a tree = it will go where everyone can get the best from it and if it doesn't go where it has traditionally gone for the last 20 years then the yobs have won. Not my style. See last December's Mercury. Apparrently the first time the word 'goolies' was printed in that august organ. The tree will be replaced, then lights will go up and Big brother will be watching. And if I have my way this year, anyone trying to steal the lights or trash the tree will end up in court minus goolies.

where do all these ASBO's come from? Hertford is such a nice town by day, but at night, it's as if truck-loads of chavs are dropped off in town. Don't get me started on those little sh!ts that bomb around town in gangs on their hairdryer-engined scooters. Anyone with a hooded top should be banned from going within 200 meters of the xmas tree, therefore keeping them out of the town cente.

and said goolies would be sprayed in silver and gold and displayed on the tree as a deterrent [}:)]

Woke up this morning to see the little tree being chopped down and replaced! Wish I'd got a photo of it before it went, it did look very amusing. [:D]

I'm sure somebody would have taken a picture of it, if it's as small as people make out.

Here's a question for SloopJohn; [?] Any idea why the Christmas Lights on the corner of Maidenhead St and Bull Plain are left on after they are installed? The same thing happened last year. I'm not complaining, they look very nice from my flat, I'm just curious why it happens to these specific lights. I also think it detracts slighltly from the big xmas lights 'turn-on' if half the lights are already lit.[:D] ..and for everyone's information, the elves are currently decorating the tree in salisbury square. [:)]

No![?] Noticed that one is still on in Fore Street. I think that happened last year as well. When you go round the town with lighting engineers etc etc and everyone tells you that everyone is hunky dory and come the turn on they are not, you are not best pleased. Most of the lighting in place apart from the tree - small problem with switch but it will be all right on the night. BTW it is not actually possible to turn on all the lights at the same time. Well, it is but you have to tweak the national grid a bit. Alternatively you have to have a host of small people with radios standing by each of the power points with radios ready to throw the switch when advised. This is how its done in the West End and why it sometimes goes very wrong. Battery goes flat, lorry passes by at wrong moment drowning out reception, switch don't work etc etc. Nothing so sophisticated in Hertford. We set all the timing switches for the same time so that none come on together and then turn on the christmas tree lights. I will be the one with the spare bulbs on Saturday afternoon.

When is the Grand switch on then? Is it this Saturday Afternoon? I'll make sure I'm at home to capture it all.

I think sneering at Tesco's generosity supporting a community event is uncalled for. Going back to the original title of this thread, I think I have won the Christmas Lights Top Trumps with the display I spotted today on Cranborne Close (Hornsmill). Words fail me. It's worth a detour for anyone who uses the Lower Hatfield Road. [:)]

If i could have transported the Old Barge directly into Salisbury Square I would have been well happy. A bit over the top this yesr but Folly island looks really bright, colourful and well... Christmassy.[8D]

Before anyone else comments the lights are going out all over hertford. Or in my case, not at all. Somewhere between Piggotts and Highways there is someone who knows the answer and it is not me. I am sure the timing, not to mention the power will be fully restored to normal before they have to come down.[:I]
