I'm assuming this is a copyright issue. In which case, can't Joe 90 charge for his reports? And can't HRFC ask for image rights every time one of their players is featured in a photo?

Exactly, its pathetic, all I wanted was a few action shots, but they wouldnt budge. You never know waht may happen if someone offers there services and they turn out good enough to supply to the Mercury.

It's the same with anything. When the Mercury photographer arrives at a local event he leaves a leaflet detailing how to acquire prints of his photos, at a cost.

This is a personal story and I do not speak for anyone else nor seek to represent the opinions of anyone else. Just before the 2003 Rugby World Cup I managed to secure an England O2 shirt which was signed by the entire winning squad before they left the UK for the campaign. The shirt was offered for sale at a Hertford RFC Youth and Mini's Auction Night fundraiser at the Clubhouse. Understandably the shirt attracted some considerable interest and it attained a very decent price. The shirt was later presented to the winning bidder at a Supporters Lunch not long after England had won the Cup. At that time the Mercury were touting and gagging for Rugby World Cup related stories. I gave them the scoop and the photo opportunity during the presentation. You might have thought that we would have been gladly given a copy of the presentation pics by the Mercury or the photographer. The reality was that the Mercury wouldn't give them up and I couldn't get a digital copy from the photographer for the website without having to pay. Sadly, we do not have a picture of that presentation and I sorely wish I had taken my own camera along. I still have a few pictures of the shirt but that's hardly the point. Call me old fashioned but a favour deserves a favour, and a copy of the pic was the most that I would have expected in return for the scoop. Reality - The Mercury needs news to survive. Reality - I no longer have a desire to get the Mercury to get it. Somewhere near the bar or looking for it.
