Barneys Grill

Saturday lunchtime I was lucky to get a seat in this busy cafe. Why? well straightforward grub (breakfast special for me) reasonably priced, and for atmosphere a fog of cigarette smoke and clinking mugs of tea. It was like stepping back in time. Magic.

Don't think Barneys is as good as it was since new owners few years back. Prefer Rose's Cafe but any cafe is fine by me.

I think these gems should be differentiated from cafes-with-an-acute-accent and caffes-with-a-pretentious-double-eff. My preference is to call them caffs. Barneys is a true caff, as is the Glass House, by my reckoning. My definition of a caff is: Cup of tea for under £1 Served in mugs Smoking still allowed inside Chips on the menu, and called chips - not Fries or Pommes Frites Full fried breakfast available Open for breakfast Anything I've missed off?

Excellent stuff Nora. Yes, Glass House and Rose are very good but for sheer cosiness its Barneys for my 1st choice.

Hold down the Alt-Gr key whilst typing the 'e'. Works for other vowels, too.

Does anyone remember it being called Wiltshires many moons ago? A bit more smokier and grubbier but still fab!

When I first worked in Hertford part of the sign had been nicked and it was called "Barneys ill" for ages!

Totally off topic but Norah has reminded me - for many, many years I really did believe there was a place called 'Hatfield the North.'

Open at 7am so you can have breakfast while waiting for contractors to arrive. Nice bit of bubble, P says. Good cofféé for that time of the morning when feeling fragile.

Thank you! I've been racking my brain, trying to remember the former name since this post went on. The classic greasy spoon.

Havn't been in for years - but they get extra "caff" points if the ketchup is in plastic squeezy bottles that are gunked up around the top and the sugar is loose or in lumps - not sachets.

As opposed to a fry?

Or supposed to be loose, but is in lumps.

On typical caffs, see this web site http://russelldavies.typepad.com/eggbaconchipsandbeans/

I used to go to Barneys all the time. But since they wacked the prices up and painted it a disgusting yellow I won't go back. The Rose cafe is nearly half the price, and you don't need sunglasses to sit in it.

In Railway Street, in the same row as Greggs and what used to be the fish mongers. It's been there for years and I can remember when they used to do pretty much the same menu as you'd get in a Wimpy Bar. I used to go in there for the breakfast specials but I tend to be in too much of a rush to get to the office nowadays.

I've always been a Barneys girl (nee a Wiltshires girl!) and have also converted hubby to its delights BUT hate to say it since it has been shut we were tempted by Roses and, wash my mouth out, I think it may have the edge! Hopefully Barneys can pull us back!

Good to see Barney's Grill open again. I'll have to give it a try one morning when I'm not in a rush!

In my opinion, the glasshouse is better (and cheaper) than both Barneys and Roses. I have a standard breakfast on my way to work, of egg, bacon sausage and beans and a superb real coffee for £2.95.

Yes I have heard good reports of the glasshouse although yet to try. Is it correct that they use Braughing sausages as that could tempt me!

They do indeed use Braughing sausages. Yours sincerely, F&F, your local regional Braughing outlet[:D]

Four of us had a great Barney's meal at lunch today. More seats and prompt service. Will never give it up, not even for secret service.

I agree with Doormanstu - Barneys is loads better since they have expanded. Mrs Muddy & I go there nearly every Saturday morning for our brekky. They have our tea at the table within 2 minutes of sitting down & always remember our order (cheese on toast with beans every week for me - I'm easily pleased). The fumes from the smokers can sometimes overwhelm, but their days are numbered & we are prepared to put up with it for great simple food & excellent service.
