Does anyone know of any spinning (the bicycle kind) classes in the area. I know they have them at Cannons but I'm not that keen on spending £55pm for the privilege.

Yes I know its not strictly in hertford but they do have spinning classes at john warner sports centre in hoddesdon. I havent been to that class but I have been to others and they are usually quite good they lots of bikes. Classes are £5.50 each time for a non member but if you join for £37.50 a month all classes are free and you save in the long run. You will also have to book a place 24 hours in advance. I think the sports centre in Stevenage may do them, too. It's the one across the road from the railway station.

I think Springs do them as well, but I don't know if this is of any use to you (50/50 chance, I suppose).

The local choice is Cannons, yup £55 pm is expensive for one spinning class pw. But if you add every thing else to it and use it, it soon becomes cost effective. Unless of course, you have just had your first child, the gym goes out the window. Pass me another doughnut please!

£55 pm is not only expensive it is massively overpriced. I used to go to a gym in the Holborn area of London a few years ago and it was less than £40 pm. Ok it didn't have a swimming pool but the rest of the gym was to a similar standard if not superior to Cannons. I also recently took part in a survey of another website I peruse, the question was do you attend a gym and if you do how much does it cost - nobody was anywhere near £55 and most of the people replying attended gyms in central London and the City. Average prices seemed to be in the £40-45. Cannons operates a virtual monopoly and can afford to charge what they like. I have to say this irks me somewhat.

Its full everynight so......... they must have done their market research correctly. You paid £40 for a gym without a pool, how much would each swim cost in a pool in central London? I recon £2 minimum, so if you went to they gym 3 times a week and finished off your session with swim the extra charge would be around £24 pm making your total £64 approx. I know its a hypothetical argument but..... Also the cost of gyms in the suberbs are more expensive, as people tend to go to the gym as they get off the train or finish work locally. Supply and demand. The closest other options are John Warner and Stevanage by the look of it. Cant comment on JW as I have not been since the refurb, but I would guess it is not a patch on the Cannons facilities and Stevange, well need I say anymore!

VM - Can't fault anything you've said. The reason that Cannons is sooo expensive is that there is no competition. We can say that the price of the service of the gym is about £45 pm as evidenced by the London pricing where there is plenty of comeptition. As you say it is packed out at £55pm, it might be too busy at £45, I'm sure it would be quieter at £65. Plenty of people in that survey went to gyms in the suburbs as well and the most expensive was £49 (although I can't remember if that was in London or 'burbs). As you say they've done their research and they can get away with charging £55, Cannons shareholders must be delighted. It also indicates that there is probably room in the market for another, if less "premium" gym in Hertford.

There is a less premium gym in Hertford at Hartham, I used to be a member, as did a lot of the the current Cannons members. It is not a patch on Cannons and still costs £37.50, yes it has all the right machines, but it has no space, no classes, crappy changing rooms, no instructors walking around, I could go on. So really in my view the difference of £17.50 pm which equates to just under 60 pence a day, is not much more to spend if you a a regular user.

Most people are at work M-F 9.30 til 11.30. Me included. I used to go before and straight after work, but now I pick my son up from Tiny Toes. My wife gets in at 6.30 and I like to spend some time with her and him as a family. I have managed to get down there on a few occasions after 7.00 ish. Is that ok ?
