Parking Charges To Rise

Saturday 5 December 2009

The District Council are proposing to increase parking charges by up to 14%.

The inflation busting rises will see the price of a one hour ticket rise by 10p to 80p, whilst a two hour ticket will rise from £1.40 to £1.50, a 7% increase.

The price hikes were agreed at a recent meeting of the council's executive committee and will be recommended to a meeting of the full council before coming into force in March next year.

Permits for residents' parking schemes will also rise by £1.50 to £33.

Councillor Mike Carver, Executive member for planning policy and transport, said: "We want to encourage shoppers into our towns to support our businesses. At the same time our car parks provide an important source of income for other related services in the district. Ideally we'd introduce no rise in any of our car parks but the income is not one we can afford to forego. By introducing a small rise in Bishop's Stortford and Hertford we're making sure it's the people who actually use the car park, rather than every council tax payer in East Herts, who pays to park."
