A team of Street Pastors hit the town tonight in an initiative run by churches in Hertford and Ware, together with the police and district council.
The volunteers have been in training over the last few weeks and will regularly patrol the town at weekends during the evening and early hours in distinctive blue uniforms.
"Street Pastors are an inter-denominational church response to urban problems, engaging with people on the streets to care, listen and dialogue", according to their website at www.streetpastors.co.uk.
The scheme is being co-ordinated by Rich Hartwig of Hertford Churches Together.
