You might want to go back to the old forum and read the discussions about the alleged tunnels under Hertford. Whether or not you choose to believe any of it is entirely up to you.

' IF' being the operative word. Ask the Acheson boys. They would probably have to kill you though.
Re: Secret Tunnels. ??
Hi
Is anyone here actually serious about finding and going into these tunnels?
I have read everything there is to read on these tunnels, would anyone here like to share some information?
I WILL find/get into these tunnels, who want in?
Mark

This could all end apocalyptically like the end of "Paint Your Wagon" when the whole town decends into the unsupported pits weighed down by the profusion of parking enforcement operatives, manicurists and baristas

Any news on the inaugural 'descent into the tunnels' experience that was promised earlier on in this post?

Sorry to drag this up but I saw on Mercury online that B158 Parliment Square & Castle Street will be closed for “sewer” repairs.
I wonder if they are going to repair the sewers or are they looking for the Knights Templar tunnels?
“We are talking here about a largely unknown, indeed mostly secret, ancient underground network that stretches beneath the towns main street and extends to Fore Street, Market Square, Parliament Square, Hertford Castle, Church Street, Bluecoats, Priory Street and in fact many, many other places. ”

Re: Secret Tunnels. ??
The articles Joe quotes are from the Mercury of 8 October 2004 and the Insider is the on-line magazine published by Ben and Tim Acheson who 'broke' the story about underground tunnels to Raymond Brown in the first place. The whole thing was based upon the existence of a subterranean passage from Bayley Hall down to Fore Street found in a 1898 set of papers in Hertfordshire Archives. Not a tunnel. If you read those pieces you will discover that no one has actually been down the tunnels - including of course my old newshound chum Raymond. For a few years it put Hertford at the centre of attention from the worlds media looking for tunnels, dungeons, Knights Templar, Illuminati and the Holy Grail. It had nothing at all to do with promoting the Insider and the anniversary of the persecution of the Templars by the Pope and the request for a full apology after seven hundred years.
I could go on but Admin will slap my hand and say no self publicity Sloop old boy.
If you search for 'Tunnels of Hertford' you might a) find my website or b)the book on ebay and other distributors. The web page is an edited account of the previous 8 pages it used to occupy but the ebook is full of history, odd facts, maps, photos and the history of the Templars in Hertford - a very short chapter indeed. Plus an answer to the existence of tunnels or not and an explanation which many may find quite disappointing.
I can say no more but it was a wonderful story and one we wanted to use a hook for Hidden Hertford such as they do in Royston. This was over ruled but as Raymond Brown once told a Town Councillor - he being Scottish - 'there's no Loch Ness monster but it hasn't done their tourist trade any harm'.
