We use Crane and Staples at Welwyn Garden City for wills etc - call them on 01707 329333 For tax advice, cross the road from there to Titan House and see Stuart Edmunds - 01707 368924 or 07949 787199

I found Crane & Staples to be adequate, if a little slow when we used them to handle our house purchase (they still had a Hertford office then). We then used them to arrange a Deed of Easement and they were completely useless and dragged their feet no end. I had to complain to their management multiple times and in the end, they just walked away and said they were no longer interested as it wasnt going to make them enough money! We switched to Longmores who have been excellent and completed the work in no time. I'd neveruse Crane & Staples again, but would recommend Longmores.

I used David Bird from Crane and Staples in WGC for our wills, he was very thorough and made some excellent suggestions. I would recommend him.

Many thanks everyone for the suggestions. I had a look at Longmores fee basis and they appear to charge £160+VAT for a single will! I would have expected them to do both our wills for that price. Any other comments on price or other suggestions welcome...

There are now online Will providers that offer Wills at a much lower price than the £160+Vat for example that Razor was quoted. You can begin making a Will from around £30 in most cases however i suppose the difference being you don't necessarily get the 'face to face' experience that you do with a Solicitor. I suggest you read the Terms & Conditions you agreed to when joining the forum, specifically the section regarding advertising. I'm sure no-one here would be surprised to learn that you are the marketing manager for the Worcester based company you provide a link to.

Also make sure they are not likely to go bankrupt and leave a copy somewhere safe. Watched an Heir Hunters programme and a lady had made a will and left it with the solicitors, they went bankrupt and the will could not be found. As she was a widow and the children were her step-children ie her husbands sons they were not Blood relatives of hers so they were not entitled in English law as it stands to inherit so lost what should have gone to them and it went to people who never knew her.. It was very upsetting for them.

As a solicitor yourself, is this based on your experience of having used an online service provider or based on your need to bash the competition? [:p]

As this topic has been temporarily resurrected I should mention that after a fair bit of shopping around we went with Betteridges in the end. Mainly because they were the cheapest (unless you go online!!), but its normally not a complicated thing to do so unless it is I dont think you need a "specialist" solicitor. They quoted £150 if both wills were the same, £200 if different. Ours were slightly different but they still only charged £150 for the two.

Not at all - as a litigator it will create more business for me and my ilk if people do try and take a short cut and save a few quid to be quite honest. 'Other peoples stupidity keeps the lights on' my old boss used to frequently shout at me as a trainee. When it comes to things like wills, the premium of seeing a proper solicitor who you can sue if it all goes fruit shaped, is what you are paying for.

We did a will with Longmores via Will Aid a couple of years ago, and donated £100. http://www.willaid.org.uk/will_makers You'll have to wait until November though
