Ok, some peeps that I know in the various spiritual circles I dip my toes into are organising an evening of clairvoyance in Hertford Corn Exchange, Tuesday 5th June. That's this coming Tuesday. Doors open 7.00pm, starts 7.30pm. It's NOT a psychic fayre with cystals stalls etc. The kinda format is more Colin Fry and Tony Stockwell events.... but no possessions like Derek Acroah on Most Haunted *rolls eyes*. And definitely no trance channellings from deceased fast food retailer bosses like this *ahem* : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSttaI_zXmA Enjoy that clip btw !! [;)] Format will be a about 3 or 4 mediums on stage giving messages to the audience etc.... I'm helping out with this event, so if anyone would like tickets, £10 each in advance - please email : poisonous_monkee(at)hotmail.com I am told that tickets may well be available and sold on the door on the night, but no guarantees - it may sell out quickly. Contact the Corn Exchange or Hertford Tourist Office for more info : 0906 470 0867 Note from Admin: Calls to this number cost 60p/min and they will simply tell you the number of the local tourist information centre, which is 01992 584322 Thanks a lot ! Monkee x

I'll have 10 tickets. And it sounds so good I'll pay £100 each for them. Come round tonight and collect the money. If you're genuine, you'll know the address.

Ok, Shall I pop into your workplace to collect the money for the tickets then ? Just to make sure - what time does Maccy D's close tonight anyway ?

I'd imagine a somewhat miserable affair, due the tradition of striking happy mediums.

You lot! Honestly! Do you have to be scornful about everything? Monkee never said he was psychic, just that he was helping out. [:)] Why can't you all be positive about this local event, instead of taking the p1ss? I for one welcome this fascinating event to our county town and hope the organisers enjoy a thoroughly successful evening, exploiting the vulnerability of the bereaved, the deluded and the mentally ill. Crikey, a lot of responses... I'm not totally bowled-over by the enthusiasm but nevermind.

I'm a fairly chappy - I'm not exactly sure who's going to be on stage doing their thang, but I'm sure they won't be miserable old gits. Most of the Mediums and spiritual folk I know are far from miserable. In fact, have you ever actually met a Medium ? I fear perhaps not. In fact, I'd go so far to say I bet noone who's posted in here has probably ever actually met one in person. I'm guessing most people's impressions of what the psychic / spiritual business is all about is probably based on shows like Most Haunted. Bit of a shame really. And on that note... thanks Rachel... I think. I think also I'll leave the deluded and mentally ill firmly in this forum where they belong, lol. It is a shame there are so many narrow minded people in here, but not to worry - hopefully those who are meant to come across this event will do so... For those who think it's all a load of codswallop, that's absolutely fine, you can quite happily not attend the event and bypass this thread altogether, I really don't mind. Perhaps even spend a night or two at Chingle Hall or Chillingham Castle - I'm sure that'd wipe the smirks off a lot of faces. If you have the guts that is... [;)]

Ha ha !! Ok I see there's a slight issue with the contact telephone number... I nabbed that off some Hertfordshire Tourist information website. Sooo, forget the 60p a minute line... call : 01992 584322 instead. Better still - just turn up. "Evening of Clairvoyange" Hertford Corn Exchange, 7pm. Tickets on the door : £10 each. Ends about 10pm ish. You can leave early if you need to do so. Event is held on : TUESDAY 5th JUNE. There's plenty of tickets left. So just turn up basically. I've had a lot of emails asking about the format, so I'll reiterate : 4 mediums standing on stage, giving messages to an audience (sitting down) either from those on the other side in Spirit, or on a psychic level regarding life issues past, present and future. It's not exactly fortune telling, but there may be the odd future prediction who knows. I've yet to meet a single medium who's never ever given at least one message about future stuff. The emphasis though will hopefully by about messages from Spirit. Believers / non-believers / not sure people - it really doesn't matter. All that's required is an open mind. For those who think it's all rubbish and laugh their socks off at the very idea, that's fine,... stay at home at watch Eastenders [;)]. And don't respond to this thread with insults. I can't be bothered. Intelligent questions always welcome though. And on that note.... There will also be a short Question & Answers / discussion session at the end (optional). This will probably be an informal affair in the Bar area and will be a chance for people to ask questions or discuss topics of a spiritual nature with the mediums attending. This is optional, but usually quite friendly and informative as well. For this, no questions are taboo and nothing is out of bounds. No question is too silly to ask, we would'nt want people afraid to ask anything for fear of being laughed at - ask anything you like or simply sit back and listen to the discussion, totally up to each individual. There will also be leaflets and various other information on spiritual advancement and other resource material for development and learning. Think that just about covers it, [:D]... to all those going, thanks a lot and see you there... Any questions ? [email protected] Thanks. x

In amongst all this good humoured p*** taking, has is occurred to anyone what monkee was actually proposing? This was seen as an evening, reliant on the suspension of disbelief in the finality of death, the means being afforded by fear of that. Some see this to be assisted by exploiting grief of survivor's inablity to accept that finality for themselves or loved ones. Easy to ridicule, condemned for it's lack of physical evidence and thus judged to be manipulative or evil. Imagine if monkee had posted a thread urging others to attend a church, of almost any denomination or religion. All of the above would still be true, but would the response have been as strong? One is seen as a charleton and confidence trickster, the other is so established that tradition protects it from comment, though it is similar in all the ways which have been condemned here.

Oh my - next you'll be telling me that Santa isn't real and that I shouldn't bother to put my teeth under my pillow! What is the world coming to. The 'Church' of whatever kind is a confidence trick on a grand scale. For those of you that believe, all well and good, and those of us that don't shouldn't be frowned upon and told we are going to Hell (which incidently probably doesn't exist!) etc.

I think it was meant to be an evening of clairvoyance rather than a meeting of a spiritualist church. There is a difference. The Spiritualists meet at the Friends Meeting House.

quote:Billy Graham? Collection plate? Ever been to the Vatican and wondered where it all came from, or checked out the value of church owned land or their political power? A gift from a god perhaps, magically sent from heaven? But I digress..... All religions rely on "mediums", whether they are called that, or priest, vicar, profit, rabbi, pope. It is one person, or group of persons persauding others that an etherial entity wishes them to believe in what they are being told out of faith, regardless of evidence. In most religions they are threats of penalties for not believing or doubting, regardless of how well one lives one's life otherwise. Though not defending it in any way, what monkee proposed at least did not carry any threat or penalty for disobedience. I glibly made fun of it too, but then wondered why I might have been more cautious had he been representing a faith with a more powerful hold on it's followers. Hmmmm. No lightning bolts yet.....

Interesting postings - finally we're getting some intelligence coming through from people, lol. OK, let's see...
quote:The problem with that $1m challenge lays with the definition of one word : proof. What exactly constitutes proof ? Who are mediums trying to prove anything to in this instance ? The answer : A highly sceptical and cynical grumpy old man who I'd imagine would be quite unwilling to part with $1m. That's a lotta money - would you just give it away on a whim ? I think not. What I am getting at is that proof is often subjective according to who is prepared to accept it as such. Proof to one person is not proof to another. With such challenges, even if some success is gained on the part of the medium - the stakes will simply get raised higher, and higher, and higher to unfeasible realistic results. As soon as XYZ is a success, the bar is then automatically raised.. "Ahaa, you did that... but can you now do THIS ?" You cannot win. Therefore the challenge cannot be won. Ever. It is a rigged race in my view.

quote:Umm, I'd like to separate the 'Church' here from anything whatsoever to do with me, my beliefs, Spiritualism or mediums. I have nothing to do with Christianity, I dropped that belief system years ago. I do not believe in Heaven or Hell - other than the state of mind and consciousness we create for ourselves. So far as life after death goes, I personally believe we continue in a state of conscious existence at one with the Universe and of our own making. It goes a little complicated from there, but basically I do NOT believe in an external third party entity called 'God' that 'puts' people in Heaven or Hell. To me that's just a weapon of fear used by the Church to make people tow the line. I do have some links with the Spiritualist 'Church'... but I hate that word, 'Church'... and there is a lot of debate as to whether it should be dropped. I think it should be. Centre, Community, Hall, Movement, Gathering... anything but Church. The Spiritualist's as a whole, are vary varied in their beliefs, and that is encouraged, not condemned. Which is a good thing and does differentiate from other religions. Go into a C of E church and ask the vicar to preach some of the teachings of Buddha and you will get glared at.... ask the same thing at a Spiritualist centre and you'll probably be told : "cool, let's see what he says and discuss". I've been to Spiritualist meetings where all sorts of belief systems and teachings are given, Buddhist, Native American, Jesus (yes I do believe he walked the Earth, but I think most of the Bible is just ramblings made up about him), Hinduism, Sikhism.. all sorts. Which is a great thing !! .... if only all religions could be as open minded... world peace may be a possibility. At the moment, most organised world religions seem to dwell on the differences between belief systems, rather than similarities. A mentality of : "we're right, you're wrong and we're going to condemn you or even kill you for it.... because ours is better than yours..." This needs to be change to : "Ok, so we believe different things, yes. But let's see if we can find some middle ground, share our teachings and see if we can learn from each other ? Afterall, are we not all after the same thing in essence ? Love. Unity. Peace ? Have we forgotten this ? I respect your right to believe in what you wish... and I will not judge you for it." But whatever, we'll see.
The 'Church' of whatever kind is a confidence trick on a grand scale. For those of you that believe, all well and good, and those of us that don't shouldn't be frowned upon and told we are going to Hell (which incidently probably doesn't exist!) etc.
quote:Unless of course... such souls do find out the truth and come back and inform us [;)] ... Read the Seth Material by Jane Roberts. This is what religions truly fear. The idea of a soul coming back from the 'dead'... or as I like to call it 'a higher state of consciousness' - and telling people back here on earth what it's REALLY like... Why should that be such a problem to a religion ? ... Well, what would happen if souls were to say : "Ya know what, there's no such thing as Heaven or Hell, or a violent, condemning, judgmental, jealous God... there's just a state of peace and learning. It doesn't really matter what you get up to on this planet, you don't need to do anything to please this 'God' character. You don't need to be baptized, or follow 10 commandments, or pray, or go to church or anything. Just live and be happy, you will not and cannot be judged by another. You only have yourself to guide your own actions". With that in mind.... see how damaging that statement could be to religions if it were true ? [;)] Hence mediums being demonized by the Church, hence witch hunts, witch trials, people being burned alive for heresy, or as I like to put it "just a slightly different belief system". To me, there is no 'after death insurance'... because to me there is no death... physical yes, but soul no. To some people there are certain rules and rituals as insurance propagated by religions, yes. Follow the prophet, and the commands, and do this and do that, perform rituals. And fear... that four letter word is very powerful used by religions : FEAR. But that is religion. Not me. To me... nobody has to do anything... just lead yer life, by happy, and pass on to the other side without any regrets. Simple. Noone judges you. Only you judge yourself and your own actions.
Either way they both try to prove life after death. At the end of the day all religions are offering after death insurance, perhaps the perfect business as nobody can complain once their dead and find out the real truth, whatever that might be.
quote:Actually, have you ever been to church ? I used to be forced to Sunday School etc... and yes... a donation is asked for. And don't forget also, the Church of England is part funded, if not sufficiently funded by the tax payer. So yes, you ARE paying the Church.... whether you realize it or not.
Maybe Shunt - but I don't ever recall being charged admission to go to a church service
quote:Woooaaaahhh !!!! wooaah woaaah woaaahh ... and did I forget to mention wwoooooaaaahhh !!!??? Please, please... don't band me in with organized religion. Let me reiterate... I do NOT expect anyone to believe anything. Make yer own darn mind up folks. I do not believe in a third party entity called God who controls everything and needs special rituals, demands and actions to be undertaken for fear of penalties. No, no, no. Oh on that note, read : Conversations With God by Neale Donald Walsh. It ain't religious. It IS eye opening. As for persuading - I used to try.... now I don't bother. I see it as a medium's job to simply pass over information and let people makeup their own minds. I really don't care anymore what people think. Up to them, their choice. I represent no faith. Only me. and yer right... no lightening bolts... yet [;)] I am very pleased that this has turned into an intelligent discussion... at the end of the day what people believe in makes no difference to me really, and it is great to debate such matters. I often have these kindsa deep and meaningfuls with my christian / atheist / agnostic / who cares friends down the pub... all good fun !! [:D]

Hi Monkee, How did the evening go?
Reply ID 41073
Eerr... coulda been better to be honest. Turn out was fair - for all the accusations of mediums raking it in, we actually lost £20. Posters, tickets, leaflets, staff & hall hire expenses etc. (awaiting 'shoulda seen it coming' jokes *sigh*) But, it was still fun. And despite criticism, ya know - it's not ALL about money, profit and living the high life. Believe it or not, it's a pretty rough ride unless you're the top of the top. I do it personally for the love of doing it. As for the event.. I was fairly tired that evening, so was not quite 100% tuned in. I gave it my best shot anyway, I've done better. Very mixed response as well - some thought it was totally pants, others were very pleased indeed. All subjective I spose. The main thing to me is whether a) people enjoyed a fun night out and b) took back something positive, be it a message, a new understanding, to think about life, Universe, etc We've spoken to Chris, the boss at Corn Ex and he seems pretty interested for me to go ahead. So watch this space I guess...
