Sounds good but I am restricted to child friendly places (2 and 5 years old) - how do you think that would go down? Can anyone recommend childfriendly restaurants? Or nice country pubs with gardens for children? Thanks

Yes - Hillside is excellent - perhaps the best restaurant in Hertford at the minute. Also note the very efficient and friendly service there. A good place to go just for a drink too, since the bar is open to non-eaters!

I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old, an to be honest i don't think i would take them. Adults/young adults only i would have said. All the same great resturant!..at the end of the meal they asked if we would mind filling out a questionaire. On it, my only criticism was that the staff were, if anything, too attentive /self critical. They apolgised ALOT about the delay before the meal when really we hadn't waited long..and also about the gap between courses..again not a problem would have been disappointed if the course had come any quicker. My wife and I have lived in Hertford for 7 months and think it is really great compared to Broxbourne, where we used to live. The choice of restuarants is good but we feel that if we want a night out with decent food the only choice is The Hillside. Cafe Rouge and Pizza Express are pleasant and we very much enjoy going there regularly but nothing compares to The Hillside. I think Hillside has proved that there are opportunities in Hertford for a decent chef to have a successful restuarant. A good quality coffee shop would also be welcome. Why is Barooch's coffee never more than lukewarm?

My wife and I went to the Hillside last Wednesday and it was excellent. Great selection for those like us who don't eat meat. Has anyone been to the restaurent at Elbert Wurlings? Whats that like?

newgirl.....try 'Papillon' the restaurant at 'The Woodhall Arms' pub. It's run by mad French and shows....ie, good food and children are embraced....how refreshing...

In truth Steve, it really isn't interesting. Restaurants / cuisine / taste is at least as subjective as, say, music, and reviews are basically useless unless you know the indepth taste and style of the person donig the review. Practically with Papillon, I's say it's down to your expectations and how many bambinos you have in your wake ! (The Beer's pretty good too I thought, compared with the dross generally available)

David asked what Elbert Wurlings was like for food. I thought it was very good, although I have only had the Christmas menu. The meal included reserved seating in the bar/club in the basement which was good fun too.
