Valentines Day - Was it worth it?

I thought I'd start this thread a little early. I'm sure everyone is looking forward to sampling some delights ([;)])this evening, so how about everyone comments on their chosen restaurant in one place? That way all reviews are easily accessed for comparrison. I'll be looking forward to the delights of Baan Thittya, who I'm hoping will be living up to their usual high standards. Happy Valentines day (or Clinton's Cards day, if you prefer) everyone!

Well I love valentines day because Im with a very romantic other half and we enjoy it. I hate hearing these synical people slating V Day - its just an excuse to make someone feel special - whats wrong with that - you dont need to purchase anything to do it or buy into the whole commercialism deal but you can still make someone feel good. Id like to take my other half out for a meal tngt but we havent booked. Do you need to book a table for Baan Thittya? If you do do you think there would be any restaurants in town that you wouldnt need to book for?

Bann are doing two sittings this eve - 7pm & 9pm. I booked weeks ago for the 9pm because my other half is a workaholic and I didn't think she would be back in time for the 7pm siting. I just tried to change it but they're full @ 7pm, but no idea on the 9pm one.

To be honest I dont really want to book. Id prefer to walk into town and see what was available - do you think anything would be open and free enough to just walk into (besides the chippy!)?

If you can't get in anywhere, an option is to spruce up the lounge and have a floor picnic by candelight & fireling (fireplace willing). Lots of finger food, hot and/or cold, champagne, soft music and the rest is up to your imagination. It also means that you don't have far to go when tipsy! If you have kids, if they can be farmed out, so much the better for some real "you" time. Another good alternative is to have something simple tonight but book to go out on the weekend; no need to worry about work the next day, easier booking selection etc.

I'm cooking the meal of my husband's choice tonight and having a bottle of champagne, I told him that I didn't want to go out this year. He may well add his complaints about the quality of the catering tomorrow!

Pizza Express don't take bookings, so you could try there. But if full, try any of the indians - not as unromantic as you might think if you both have one of the more sophisticated meals i.e. not chicken tikka mossala - or Cafe Rouge. Although it's Valentines, it's always worth asking. Cafe Rouge has never been fully booked on any Friday we've walked in, so why should Valentines be different?

Actually, go to the shops, buy some decent food, cook it up together, open a good bottle of wine and relax at home. Put a sloppy CD on, or watch Love Actually, eat a whole load of chocolates, dress for the occasion. Then, go for a meal out at the weekend, when it's less crowded and when any potential rip-offs have disappeared.

The Girl's Own Guide to Poisioning....[}:)] or a gigolo. depends on how much time there is between your getting home and the match starting. Poor Mrs M <sigh>...[:D]

Baan was fine in the end. Luckily I called them at about 5pm and asked to change to teh 7pm slot and they had just had a cancellation, so phew! We arrived just before 7pm and tehre were only a few other couples in tehre, so we beat the mad rush. A little disappointed that they didn't tell me when I booked that they were doing a set menu, but then I didn't ask thjem either, so just as much my fault. That did cause the couple next to me to leave though, as they wanted to order from the normal menu and left when this request was declined. Our starter turned up nice & fast, which was good because I was starving. Usual high standards were adhered too. We had a bit of a wait for the main course, about 30 minutes, but it was worth the wait. It was at this point that we realised the benefit of getting there before the crowd, as they were rushed off their feet and people on the tables around us were complaining about their food arriving cold, but we had no issues with this. The people on the later sitting (9pm) might have had a wait for their tables though, as when we left at 8:45pm, tehre were still a lot of people getting served their main course or still waiting for it. All-in-all a great meal and you can't fault Singha or Chang to wash it down with (I just wish they did the traditional Thai large bottels), but I think we'll do the home thing next year. I sort of get the feel that all restaurants just try to cram in as many people as they can to maximise profit, but then that's what they're there for so who can blame them? It just doesn't make for a very intimate meal when you'r crammed in like battery hens.

I ordered a take away off of the normal menu, so the fact they were doing a set meal may account for the fact that other than the green curry and the rice everything else was a little bt of a let down and not very warm by the time I got it home.

very strange that they let you order a takeaway from teh normal menue but wouldn't let people in teh restaurant order anything other than one of the two set menu's on offer. You were pretty stuffed if you were vegetarian too, as there wasn't much on offer on either menu that was meat/fish-free. Nice though
