You gotta love St Andrew Street. Of course the buildings are all bent and don't line-up but the retailers do seem to make an effort - with their window displays at least. With that in mind I've simultaneously enjoyed the way the little garage next to the fancy dress shop used to buck this trend. Whilst Hertford Graphics and it's neighbouring hairdressers would engineer a window that Selfridges would be proud of, the little garage would steadfastly insist on showing a car battery, jump leads and a felt-tipped MOT sign... Now I hear that the fella who ran that garage has died - I offer my condolences, for what they ae worth, but I can imagine the St Andrew St retailers association must be bristling to get at that window.

Herbert, thanks for the compliment! I asked dear Des several times about his window, and of course Party World and our own Association were given leave to decorate it on a couple of occaisions. I do remember the first time I mentioned it to him though. 'How will people know that I sell batteries, if they aren't in my window?' was his quick reply. No answer to that, eh? Based on art, of course, he was ahead of his time. Wasn't the Turner Prize in 2002 by Carl Andre something similar? Finally, we will all miss Des. He was one of our street's great characters, and a loss to Hertford, too. He was a great supporter of all that we are trying to do to promote the street, and was always incredibly enthusiastic.

Ray, this will be part of the Hertford in Bloom Window dressing competition which appears to have passed by many retailers. Worth looking at Harts of Hertford as well. Margaret has done a smashing window on theme of Summer Blooms in the 50's. BTW - Vogue won the Christmas competition last year with another stunning display.

We ran a similar competition last summer and also Christmas which I themed pantomime and the Hospice shop put in a beautiful window on Red Riding Hood - but I was not the judge. I think they got runner-up. I was asked by Simon Balle if I could help with their 50th so combined the theme and came up with Summer Blooms in the 50's. There are a few other good windows in town if you look but as I am not judging please do not leave bulky plain brown envelopes stuffed with notes in my letterbox. It will have no effect apart from giving me a two week in Jaywick.

Just checked out the St.Andrews street website, great idea to have a web site like this where all the various traders can contribute and look after it. Just one question, has the Ultimate Audio Visual shop closed permanently, or will it be opening again in the future?

I think the Audio shop is being converted into flats according to the yellow poster in the window. That will be a real shame. I noticed that the linen basket had closed and wondered why. My wife has been looking for a retail outlet in Hertford to set her business up and we only noticed last week that the Linen basket had closed. It's was a nice shop and was in a fantastic building. She thought it would be perfect for her but obviously couldn't find a sign to see who the leaseing would be through or how much it would cost etc etc. I also saw that Flamsteads had closed and the shop is being sold as a freehold for £150k. Isn't that rather cheap for a commercial property?

The UAV plans were approved last Friday (20th July).

Flamsteads were considering selling the freehold, but this is no longer the case. The business was never up for sale, and is continuing "bigger, brighter, and better than before"

Oh dear - not another one - what is going on in town at the moment. So that's Lawthers, Tickled Pink & Blue and Wings! Hopefully something nice will appear in all of these and not just another estate agent or card shop, or god forbid a hairdressers [:)]
