Methvens bookshop in Bircherley Green is to close down at the end of January 2007.

Six staff are to lose their job, whilst the manager will transfer to a new shop in Surrey. Methvens has a chain of six shops plus an online company. The shop opened in 1997 and later expanded.

Other closures in the town include MacDonalds in Maidenhead Street, which closed at the end of the summer. Ultimate Audio Visual in St.Andrew Street also closed it's doors during the summer, as did Wiggington's gift shop on the corner with Old Cross. Ugly's, Jade Goodey's beauty salon, which was the subject of a Living TV docusoap, also closed it's doors after rumours were initially denied.

Birthdays and Spanish Property in Maidenhead Street have also left the town.

Still trading in Maidenhead Street is Slades, which closed it's doors a few months back, but has re-opened to sell off stock.

A number of new shops have come to town, most noticably Marks & Spencer, which opened it's doors in June.

Other new retail outlets include gift shop Starfish, two houseware shops in Bircherley Green, Twisted Rio in The Wash.

Also new to the town are T-Mobile and Calendar Club, as well as Tat-2 in Fore Street, replacing an earlier tattoo shop.

Redevelopment of Claydon's old fish shop in Railway Street is also underway, although it is unclear what the unit will be.

Sheba, also in Railway Street, remains open, but with a "To Let" sign in the window.
