Town Centre Shopping

There are around 200 shops in the town centre - a mixture of high street chain stores, specialist shops, restaurants, estate agents and banks.

There is a particularly large number of restaurants and hairdressers in the town, as well as optometrists shops (4) and cycle outlets (3).

One of the attributes that distinguishes Hertford from its' larger neighbours is the number of independent traders and specialist shops in the town. There aren't many retail parks or malls locally where you can buy cast iron radiators or stoves! Many of the towns stores have long histories, such as Botsford's - where you can still buy loose screws or Turkish Scythes. There is a shop selling historic maps, a tatooists, a hippy shop and a couple of healthfood shops. A greengrocer's stall can be found in Salisbury Square during the week and there is still a fishmonger in the town, despite the presence of Waitrose and Tesco.

Several well-known national stores have shops in the town, including Specsavers, Monsoon and Woolworths. There are two supermarkets, Waitrose and Tesco. New Look have a branch in Bircherley Green, as does Boots and bookseller Methven's. Nearby, Holland and Barratt can be found opposite W.H.Smiths, whilst a short walk will take you to Theshers, Clinton Cards, Halfords, Hinds, McDonalds and Millets.

Hairdressers and restaurants can be found in abundance in the town. At the time of writing there are nine ladies hairdressers and four gents barbers. The number of eateries is in excess of 20, ranging from Chinese, through Thai, Indian and Italian, to burgers and barbeque chicken.

There is also no shortage of estate agents and banks, with all four major players in the centre of town, together with the Nationwide Building Society. There are around eight estate agents.
