Town Centre Shopping

There are around 200 shops in the town centre - a mixture of high street chain stores, specialist shops, restaurants, hairdressers, estate agents and banks.

Waitrose

One of the attributes that distinguishes Hertford from its' larger neighbours is the number of independent traders and specialist shops in the town. Many of the towns stores have long histories, such as Botsford's - where you can still buy loose screws or Turkish Scythes. There is a shop selling historic maps, a tatooists, a hippy shop and a couple of healthfood shops. A greengrocer's stall can be found in Salisbury Square during the week and a delicatessen nearby. There are also three supermarkets - Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and Tesco.

Several well-known national stores have shops in the town, including Specsavers, Monsoon and Woolworths. New Look have a branch in Bircherley Green, as does Boots and mobile phone shop O2. Nearby, Holland and Barratt can be found opposite W.H.Smiths, whilst a short walk will take you to Theshers, Clinton Cards, Halfords, Hinds and Millets.

Hairdressers and restaurants can be found in abundance in the town. At the time of writing there are nine ladies hairdressers and four gents barbers. The number of eateries is in excess of 25, ranging from Chinese, through Thai, Indian and Italian, to burgers and barbeque chicken.

There is also no shortage of estate agents and banks, with all four major players in the centre of town, together with the Nationwide Building Society. There are around eight estate agents.

Man and Women's Fashion

There are a number of clothes shops for women of all ages. Boutiques such as Monsoon, Kitten, ID and Marmalade cater for younger women, whilst the Edinburgh Woollen Mill is aimed at the more mature customer.

There are also shops for fashionable young men, including Yates and Roberto Gerrards. More conservative gentlemen may prefer to shop at Coles in Maidenhead Street.

Gift Shops

There is also Harvest Moon, a hippy shop in The Wash.

Interior Design

Furniture and interior design shops include the town's principle furniture store, Marshalls in Fore Street, plus newcomer Loftcat in Railway Street. There is also a lighting ship named Viva Viva in St.Andrew Street.

Second Hand

Like many towns Hertford has a range of charity shops, including the Isabel Hospice, Oxfam and Help The Aged. The Oxfam shop in Maidenhead Street stocks a range of books and a selection of records.
