Housebuilding in Hertford has slowed in the years following the financial crisis. Much of the recent development in the town has consisted of flats, with relatively few one or two-bedroomed houses built. In the years 2006-9 a total of 267 flats were built, compared to 100 houses or bungalows (Source: Hertfordshire County Council).

East Herts District Council are expected to encourage the building of more houses suitable for family occupation in their forthcoming Local Development Framework which will outline policy up to 2031.
