Background

Local authorities are funded by government grants and local taxation. The level of taxation varies from town to town and funds the budgets of the County Council, District Council, Police Authority and Town Council.

Local taxes are levied on property owners depending on the value of their homes.

For the fiscal year 2002-3, the following levels of tax were applied:
