Sainsburys Proposed Supermarket
Sainsbury's are planning to open a supermarket in Hertford after purchasing a large part of the McMullens Brewery site in Hartham Lane.
An exhibition and consultation at The Corn Exchange in June saw plans for the 33,000ft store on display and representatives of the company on hand to discuss the plans with the public.
Sainsbury's claim that the existing Tesco superstore in Ware Road is overtrading and there is plenty of capacity in the town for a fourth supermarket.
However, many local residents have concerns about the location of the supermarket and the increase in traffic on Cowbridge and Old Cross, both of which already suffer from congestion.
Marks & Spencer's Simply Food have just celebrated their first year in the town, whilst Waitrose have been trading from Bircherley Green for nearly a quarter of a century.
No formal planning application has yet been submitted to East Herts District Council, but Sainsbury's hope to have planning permission by March 2008 and hope to open some time in 2009.
Have your say and tell us what you think about Sainsbury's coming to Hertford.
