Skate Park:
Planning Permission Granted

Hertford Skatepark Group are celebrating after planning permission was granted for their plans for a skatepark on Hartham Common.

The plans for the park, which will be located between the children's play area and car park, were drawn up by local architects Kirby Cove and feature three bowls - two enclosed and one open to ground level. The plans can be seen in the window of Marshalls bike shop in Railway Street.

The group's earlier plans for a skatepark nearby were rejected by District Councillors in 2003.

The cost of building the park is thought to be around £180,000 and the Skatepark Group will be working hard to raise the money. Additional funding for the building work may be available if EHDC agree to match every pound raised by the group.

East Herts District Council have already pledged £45,000 towards the building of a skate park in Hertford, although it is hoped that the day-to-day running of the park would be undertaken by the Town Council. Maintenance and insurance costs for the park are estimated by the group to be around £10,000. The majority conservative group on the council made it an election pledge to build a skate park in the town during the last election.

Many skaters currently use Hartham Lane and the War Memorial in the town centre.
