Mead Lane Setback

Derelict land in Mead Lane
Fairview Homes have withdrawn their interest in housing development to the East of the Town Centre.

The company submitted a controversial planning brief for public consultation in November 2003.

Fairview's outline plans for land off Mead Lane drew criticism from businesses in the area, together with the local civic society and even local Tory councillors. They argued that it was the role of East Herts District Council to present such briefs and not developers with a vested interest. The local Civic Society's request for a meeting with the authority was turned down.

Land forming a sizeable part of the area has been acquired by developer Flowertrail Ltd, who have already submitted plans for 112 new homes on the corner of Mill Road and Mead Lane.

Much of the former industrial land is derelict and could provide as many as 500 new homes. However, the only access to the area is via Mill Road which already suffers from significant congestion at peak times.
