Parking Strategy Unveiled

Parked cars
Details of the District Council's new parking strategy have been revealed following a consultation exercise conducted during 2002 by Pell Frischman.

The number of long stay parking spaces is to be reduced and overall charges increased, with no move away from the unpopular pay-and-display system. A one-hour time band will also be introduced, together with registration logging, a controversial system whereby parkrs have to enter their car registration details into the pay stations.

Workers in the town will be served by 317 car parking spaces in Baker Street, London Road and Hartham, with charges raised to £2.50 per day. The council acknowledges that this could lead to additional problems with on-street parking.

• Bircherley Green
• Gascoyne Way
• St.Andrews Street
Part of the increased charges will be used to finance the policing of on-street parking, which the council will take responsibility for in April 2004. Whilst the local police are still responsible for enforcing parking regulations, in reality there are rarely any traffic wardens in the town, leading to fears of chaos as Christmas approaches.
