Primary Care Trust
The South-East Hertfordshire Primary Care Trust came into being on 1st April 2001. It combined the existing Primary Care Groups that covered the towns of Hertford, Ware, Hoddesdon, Cheshunt and Waltham Cross into one organisation.
The new Trust brings together family doctors, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists and health visitors into an organisation that is responsible for buying in and supplying healthcare services for the public. The Trust covers a population of 175,000 in the east of Hertfordshire, bordering Essex in the east and Enfield in the south.
Hertfordshire Health Authority
In January 2001, Ministerial approval was given for the merger of the counties' two health authorities to form the Hertfordshire Health Authority, which finances Primary Care Trusts and provides central services such as IT.
East & North Herts NHS Trust
The East & North Herts NHS Trust is responsible for running The Lister Hospital in Stevenage and the QEII Hospital in Welwyn Garden City, both of which have Accident & Emergency units (A&E). A new hospital may also be built in Hatfield.
