Grass Track Meeting
Grass Track Cycle Racing returned to Hertford on Sunday 21st May after a 35 year absence.
The meeting was held on 300m circuit alongside Hartham Swimming Pool and was organised by the North Road Cycling Club, supported by East Herts District Council and a number of local companies.
Bicycle grass track racing was held as part of the annual Hertford Whit Monday Fete until 1965. After this time County Day was initiated.
In the eraly 1930s, the event featured hundreds of riders and thousands of spectators. The new event was on the weekend before Whitsun so as not to clash with other events and attracted a strong field of riders.
The bicycles are track bicycles with a fixed wheel, no brakes and tyres suitable for racing on grass. A number of national champions (and indeed world champions on the hard track (ie velodromes) racing competed.
