The picture below shows Fore Street in 1950.

The statue of Ceres that originally adorned the Corn Exchange was removed during the Second World War as it presented an extra hazard in the bombing raids. Note the current Post Office, which was built in 1891. The Cupola on top was paid for by public subscription. This picture was taken by Len Green and later used by the police, who blanked out the number plates to illustrate traffic faults.
