Focus On Hertford
The picture below shows Fore Street before 1890 and the building of Market Street.
Note the gas lights and state of the road. The white stone crossing in the distance kept pedestrians out of the mud. Later the setts were thought to have been used to face the supporting wall of the raised path of Part Hill. The statue of Ceres - Gpddess of Corn - stands above the Corn Exchange. The present Post Office has not been built - the old one occupies the building with two white gables on the right side of the street.
