Folly At The Folly

Cuttiung from promotional poster for Folly at The Folly The carnival atmosphere of Hertford's favourite street party is set to return on Folly Island this coming Sunday 23rd August.

Formerly The Castle Street Party, the event will retain the traditional street party atmosphere and raise even more for the National Deaf Children's Charity, says organiser Ian Butler.

"We are aiming to create a relaxed, friendly atmosphere which can be enjoyed by young and old alike. We hope to involve residents of The Folly to make this a traditional community event," said Ian.

As well as the customary mix of live music, stalls and entertainment, Folly residents have been invited to decorate their houses on the theme of Countries of the World. "I've seen this idea elsewhere" said Ian, "and it really seemed to bring people together!"

Thornton Street resident Emma Weedon commented: "I would like to get involved. It's such a great idea that we should celebrate the little gem that is Folly Island. I'm really looking forward to decorating our house."

Ian is urging children of all ages to come to the party dressed as Countries of the World. "They can be as literal or as cryptic as they like" said Ian, "There will be prizes for the best and most creative outfits." Once again, the Guinn family will be hosting their children's activity area. As well as a balloon race, they will provide the wherewithal for children to dress up and join the Countries of the World competition (or just dress up).

Live Music

There will be live music on the acoustic stage featuring some of Hertford's hottest players and singer/songwriters. And if you're sufficiently in the mood you can sing along to '60s and '70s covers performed by Five Man Woman.

Other attractions include The Green Onions Boss Sound System featuring DJ Lewis, together with jugglers, face painting, and live Scalextric racing ("Beat the Champ"). By popular demand, Steve Ball and his Drumnasium workshop return for the event and the public is invited to join in: "Come along and try one of the African djembe drums I'll have here," said Steve. "It's a fantastic and enjoyable way to relieve stress too!"

Refreshments will include a barbecue and curries, teas and coffees, and thirsts will be taken care of in the nearby Old Barge public house.

Charity

The popular street party, held in aid of the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS), is aided by the generous support of local businesses and residents. Organiser Ian Butler's thanks go to all the companies, sponsors and individuals that have done so much to make the event a success in recent years: "We are well on the way to having a fantastic day".

A veteran fundraiser for NDCS, Ian has been holding street parties for the past six years and asking friends and acquaintances to use their various talents to help out on the day. These include DJs, chefs, musicians, artists, entertainers and many more. Last year, despite bad weather, the sum raised was nearly £2,000 and he aims to raise even more this year: "The challenge is to attract as many people as possible, especially families with children, to the party to enjoy games, food, music, animals from Paradise Wildlife Park, stalls, jugglers, magicians and anything else that can be arranged. It's always a great day out and our aim is for a free, family-oriented fun afternoon. A traditional street party, in fact!"

The party now has its own web site and offers businesses reciprocal links and advertising space to help raise funds for the charity. This helps to give the event a local feel and encourages businesses to set up stalls and get involved, he says. Sponsors' praises will be sung from the rooftops, promises Ian.
