Last year's Medieval Night was on Friday 19th November between 6:00pm and 9:30pm. The annual event in the town centre combines late night shopping with a variety of events to entertain.

Medieval Night 1998For the fifth year running the Medieval Night featured charity stalls set up around the town, a craft fair in Castle Hall and an art exhibition in the Mill Bridge Rooms.

New for 1999 was a voucher scheme, offering special discounts and promotions all over the town.

The art exhibition in the Mill Bridge Rooms in The Wash (or The Seed Warehouse as it is otherwise known) featured works by members of the Hertford Art Society and is sponsored by Hertfordshire Graphics and Crafty Frames. The exhibition runs for the whole weekend. In the Castle Hall there was be a craft fair, whilst at The Hertford Club you could enjoy a complementary glass of punch. Hertford Castle was also open and there were a number of events taking place at the Museum in Bull Plain.

The evening was carried live on this website from a webcam in Salisbury Square. We were also be out and about taking photographs.

Here are some comments sent in after 1998's event:

  • I had a most enjoyable time. It was so nice to see so many people enjoying themselves and the town of Hertford, so alive and vibrant on the evening
  • We were overwhelmed by the number of people who visited us during the medieval evening
  • Thank you to everybody who helped organise the medieval night. We had a really nice time and hope you do another one next year
  • We were very successful on our stall and with two tombolas, a lucky dip and a pick a lolly game we managed to raise £266.00
Medieval Night 1998Medieval night gives everyone, residents or visitors, a rare chance to see Hertford's historic buildings, which are opened to the public especially for this evening. The Shire Hall is very popular. It was designed by the Adams brothers and built between 1767 and 1769, and is now in daily use as the magistrates courts.

The gatehouse at Hertford Castle is very popular, and the Town Council who now own the building provide special entertainment for the evening, with councillors giving tours. Last year over 1,500 people visited the robing rooms, Downshire suite and the dungeons!
