Deteriorating Properties in Hertford.

Post by arty » Tue 09 Sep, 2014 10:29 am

I've walked past the old Bob Hill showroom in Cowbridge and the old Ultimate Audio Visual shop in St.Andrew Street on numerous occasions and been saddened by the state of disrepair these empty buildings are in.

Whilst I understand that there are historical disputes surrounding both properties, are there no enforcement notices that EHDC can use to ensure that buildings are kept in a reasonable state of repair? It seems such a pity that these (possibly listed?) are being left to deteriorate so extensively, especially as both are in prime 'entrance' locations to the town.

Any thoughts?

Totally agree . If my information is correct the owners don't have to pay any busniess rates on the being empty, unlike more modern properties, as they are listed but I would have thought that part of that allowance should be a stipulation should be that they had to be kept in some sort of reasonable repair.

Assuming they are listed, there are things that local authorities can do, from making the building weather tight themselves to forcing a compulsory purchase. But of course it'll all cost money:

The Bob Hill shop is a beautiful old house and it looks around 300 years old to me. It's a tragedy to see it left to decay like this.

Regarding the Bob Hill building in Cross Road, there have been people working on it and a few months back someone moved into the rear section as a house. They are trying to let the front 'shop' unit out via David Perkins but no interest it seems.

Also I am pleased to say that Hertford is a new modern town according to David Perkins as
Hertford has two railway stations, both with electrified services into London.
When did that happen???

I think the old Bob Hills shop was bought by the guy who owns/owned Chase property services (or whatever they are now called).

I may be wrong.

The old Bob Hill shop was the Travellers Rest. One of the famous old buildings of Hertford. At one time it had Pingy's fish and chip shop and Bill Munt's hairdressers at the side and a greengrocers at the front, Freddie Phipps I think but I could have that name wrong?
