I don't think UKIP are racist. I think they're racist and homophobic.

Some people confuse xenophobia with racism

well that's a good way to start any post.... 'I don't think...'

beacuse a party stands up and says what it thinks ( and by the way I could never have anything to do with a party that was either of the things you claim) they are branded right-wing, reactionary and racist . if they wanted a particular group excluded from the UK I would agree with you, but they don't . They want controlled immigration because of the damage the Labour and Tory open-door policy is doing to Britain today.

and one other thing. there is only one UK political party that refuses to accept former members of that nasty lot at the BNP..... can you guess which?

UKIP only enacted a ban on BNP members after they were embarassed into it by the press. Apparently the racist BNP members found "non-racist" UKIP quite appealing.

And you talk about fearing for your children's future. I've just had a look at the Hertford and Stortford UKIP website and some of the other policies they have are to repeal the EU landfill directive and to stop any more environmental "scams" such wind turbines. They also want extensive shale gas production in the UK. By the time my children are grown up there'll be nowhere habitable left to live if UKIP get their way.

So as well as being racist and homophobic (they would look to repeal the same sex marrige law) they would actively trash the environment too. Brilliant. Just brilliant.

Recent studies have shown that migrants bring a net contribution to the UK's coffers. They pay tax and are much, much less likely to claim benefits than Brits. The real problem is that councils and the government have failed to provide extra schools, hospitals and social housing over a number of decades. So instead of doing the right thing and building more, they've taken the lazy option of blaming foreigners. And the saddest thing is that we've fallen hook, line and sinker for it.

This is a discussion about the Bengeo by-election, not UKIP.

...but as UKIP are standing discussion of their egregious and erroneously founded national "policies" that feed on fear, hate and ignorance is a quite legitimate use of a local forum surely.

We do talk about the weather here also and that even goes on in Ware!

When I was door knocking in Hertford at the last general election, I was taken aback by how much people wanted to talk about their fear of too much immigration and it appeared to me that their need to talk about it had been pent up for fear of being labeled racist.

As an aside, I think many of these people are actually looking for a national socialist party rather than UKIP, but my key point is that frustration and misconceptions grow when people don't feel they can discuss their concerns openly. They don't say what they think and others don't get a chance to enlighten them.

Perhaps the significance of national parties in town council elections is that town councils are breeding grounds for district councils, then county councils, than national parliament - and if national policies help people take more of an interest in town council elections....maybe that is OK.

Policies based on Fear? but that's how all politics is based and from each UK party isn't it? . example, Labour's next election manifesto will be appealing to the fear amongst their electorate that if they don't vote Labour then they may have to give up their cushy public sectors desk jobs (with gold -plated perks) and get a job in the private sector. and for those Labour voters who don't want to work, they'll say all the unless they get in and tax middle-income familes to an early grave, other parties will take away their council house/benefits/easy life ... anyway this thread is supposed to be about that politically vibrant area of Bengeo and it's by=election. :D rant over :o

Did you read the Mercury about that immigrant in Ware assaulting those two females or the immigrant on the front page trying to do a smash and grab from Hinds, sorry it must just be my imagination. And there are more to follow in their footsteps.
