Another public consultation on Hertford Town Centre

Post by SloopJohnB » Wed 11 Mar, 2015 3:12 pm

I post this in full from the East Herts Council press release:

Quote begins: A leading planning and urban design consultancy, Tibbalds, has been commissioned to develop a Vision and Urban Design Strategy for the town centre.

Key elements of the study, led by East Herts Council working together with Hertfordshire County Council and Hertford Town Council, are to consider the future of major sites, the design and management of the street scene and transport issues for the town centre, which include:

Bircherley Green
Maidenhead Street
The Marquee in Railway Street
The role of public transport
Walking and cycling
Parking
Traffic circulation

The consultants will work with property, retail, transport and landscape architectural specialists over the next few months to develop the strategy.

A steering group of Councillors Peter Ruffles, Suzanne Rutland-Barsby and Andrew Stevenson is leading the project.

Suzanne Rutland-Barsby, East Herts Council's Executive member for community and partnership liaison said: "This is an exciting opportunity to look at ways to revitalise the town centre, to help shops and businesses to thrive and to ensure that it remains a popular destination for visitors."

Terry Douris, Hertfordshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways, said: "We are delighted to be working together on this initiative to consider ways to enhance the vibrancy of the town centre and its accessibility for all users."

Katja Stille, associate director of Tibbalds said: "Hertford town centre has an advantage right from the start because of its historic environment, riverside and attractions such as the castle.

"The strategy our team puts forward will respond to and respect these and other features of the town and ensure that future development does not lose sight of Hertford's character while still enabling well-planned investment and improvements to take place in the short, medium and long term."

Urban design, masterplanning and planning specialist Tibbalds will lead the multidisciplinary team, working with Aspinall Verdi, Dally Henderson Landscape Architects, JMP and the Retail Group.

Come along to an exhibition and ask your questions at the Millbridge Rooms, The Wash in Hertford on Friday March 20 from 10am-4.30pm and Saturday March 21 from 9.30am-12.30pm.

There will be a public consultation on the emerging strategy in the summer. Look out for further details at www.eastherts.gov.uk. Quote ends.

I just cannot say any more. Just hope as many people as possible turn up on the above dates to make your feelings/ideas/suggestions/comments known. Whether anyone will take any notice of them and whether they will be incorporated into the final plan is an unknown quantity.

Town Centre retailers have already been contacted and key stakeholders have been invited to a separate workshop. It is a sweeping survey but I tend to get blinding flashes of deja vu every time I read the above.

I see EHDC have an informal consultation on Maidenhead Street at https://www.eastherts.gov.uk/consultations
which cover Letter to Residents, General Arrangement Plan and Traffic Regulation Order. Not very well publicised to the general population.
