Brickendonbury Estate Heritage Open Day 9th September

Post by Brickendonbury » Fri 04 Aug, 2017 11:49 am

On Saturday 9th September 2017, Brickendonbury Estate is opening its doors again to the public and participating in England’s largest heritage event – Heritage Open Days – the annual, four-day cultural event that celebrates the country’s architecture and history.

As part of Heritage Open Days, the event at Brickendonbury is free of charge to all visitors. Brickendonbury has been home to a busy R&D laboratory, the Tun Abdul Razak Research Centre - the UK base of the Malaysian Rubber Board - since 1974 but has a long and colourful history dating back to the 17th century.

The gardens and mansion, normally closed to the public, will be open from 12.00pm until 4.00pm, with pre-bookable guided tours of points of interest and refreshments will be available to purchase throughout the afternoon. Visitors will be free to explore the 40-acre site at their leisure or take advantage of the experienced volunteers who will be happy to talk about the history of their place of work. Archival material and photos will provide an insight into the lives of the families and organisations who have made Brickendonbury their home over the years.

Extracts from estate records kept by the Pearson family will be on display from the collection at Hertfordshire Archives & Local Studies. The Pearsons, as engineering contractors S. Pearson & Son, were associated with major civil engineering projects including the Great Northern and City underground railway in the nineteenth century. Throughout the Second World War Brickendonbury was used by the Special Operations Executive, and became Station 17, specialising in training agents and resistance workers in industrial sabotage. Part of the exhibition will feature aspects of the SOE’s activities.

This is a unique opportunity for the public to come and discover the fascinating story behind one of Hertfordshire’s most beautiful country estates.
