War Memorial Dates

Post by claudiaj » Fri 14 Nov, 2014 6:28 pm

Customer came into the library tonight to ask why the dates on the Memorial are 1914 -1919 instead of 1918? Anyone help? Obviously I looked through the many books we have on Hertford but there was no reference to why these dates were put in? I did suggest that men may have died after the end of the war from their injuries but is this the answer?
Thanks

Out of interest I have looked at the Brackley war memorial on line, I have family that are listed on there, and that also is dated 1914 - 1919, hadn't noticed this before but at a guess imagine you could be right in your thoughts as to the reason.

1918 - Armistice (cessation of hostilities).
1919 - Treaty of Versailles (peace).

My grandfather always insisted it was 1919. He was in India and Afghanistan and didn't return home till 1919.

I have his medals and on the back of the victory medal it says " The great war for civilization 1914-1919". Although the war ended in France in 1918 they were still fighting in other places!

There is an image of one here.
