Secondly the situation on the line with respect to ticket collectors is ridiculous - I only use it about 2/3 times a week and almost every time I use it there are people obviously evading the inspectors when they get on. I've told them before about someone hiding in the toilet but was simply ignored so won't bother again. With regard to safety some of these people are quite intimidating and there's often groups rather than individuals - in my opinion the ticket inspectors seem happy to go for the soft targets and I've witnessed them working the train up until the London borders then sitting down once it gets a bit too difficult! Don't be conned about safety its all about profit - send the case to the mythbusters panel at the HSE and see what they make of it.

Talking to the guy who has taken over the kiosk at Hertford East recently. He told me that he is the one that insisted side gates were closed before he agreed to take the lease. This makes people use the front door of the station and therefore at least pass by his shop
Ah! That thought did occur to me the other day... Yes completely agree about the excuses (I may ask them...Why fob us off with stupid excuses about staff safety that make no sense as there are no staff. Now I will not get irritated when I walk through as I can see the point of it.

I have noticed that they do still open the gates every now and then but they do lock them at night even though there does't appear to be any staff in the station after about 3pm

Having said this I can see some logic with respect to there is no monitoring of the area and if it was shut for 'security reasons' then I'd be more understanding as there have even been comments on here regarding people loitering in the area where the ticket machines are located and that on occasions these have been perceived as threatening. Personally I've never felt threatened by them but there have been occasions when I've walked through this area and there are groups of youngsters gathered smoking, drinking and being quite foul mouthed and generally obnoxious. Again personally I'd see this as a management issue rather than one of merely shutting off the easy access route.

However I did ask the ticket lady today about it and she said her manager has told her to keep it shut for "safety" reasons. (I think I detected a roll of the eyes
)I would urge others inconvenienced by this to get in contact either via the form or phone them on 0345 600 7245 (option 8) (although you still get an email through saying it'll be 8 working days...).
