What does HCC propose to do about pollution and congestion on the A414 over the NEXT FIVE YEARS not 2030?
2. Why does HCCs ‘have your say’ budget always tell us how much it wants to spend and how much population growth will cost but omits to tell us its income and how much that population growth will contribute to its coffers.
3. Does HCC have a published 'rat-run' policy which residents' can measure their local issues against?
4. Could EHDC be more proactive in keeping residents informed on such issues as the Maidenhead Street start-stop and other large developments such as Bircherley Green, which seems to be draining the lifeblood out of the town.
5. Why do all Council travel policies seem to be dictated by cyclists and their needs whilst ignoring the pedestrian and their need for space and safety without having to constantly avoid a collision?

As in a Frome it should be glued together by a code of ethics and guidance on dealing with disagreements (which are inevitable when people with different backgrounds and different personalities and different aims come together) rather than any political policies.

If this can happen I can see a virtuous circle developing with more local people getting engaged locally and then national government having the confidence to devolve more powers locally. With more apolitical people involved and more powers held locally....even more people will then want to get involved.

Am I dreaming or is this possible?

In 2015 it was our intention to launch another independent assault on the electorate. The feedback and interest was minimal. Jim Thornton published 'Election on a Shoestring' in 2007 for anyone looking to stand for local election without the financial backing of a party network. I helped rewrite the latest version which incorporated many ideas of Frome's 'Flatpack Democracy'. Frome is a one-off as it concentrated on one town and is more of a pressure group than a political party but the ideas formed from that movement are invaluable.

The Mercury in their usual style jumped the gun this week with its coverage of a cross party movement which is to be launched in September.

In the run up to this years local elections the question we asked was 'what is wrong with living here'. What came back was basically 'nothing'. Is there a basis for an opposition or is everyone happy as it is? More to follow from me on this but not until September.

http://www.theguardian.com/politics/201 ... c-of-frome

The Independents did not need a party machine to bring them together or a party whip to keep them in line, but are "held together by a codified way of working that acknowledged the inevitability of disagreement"

The key is getting people with different backgrounds, different interests and different personalities working together for the good of their community. You don't always have to agree or even like each other - but you need to learn when to let someone you do not entirely agree with have some support. One day when you feel passionate about something they might support you.

...........In Bengeo, for example, three seats are contested and three Conservatives are returned despite the fact that between them they receive less than 2/3 of the vote..........
At least they got to vote, in Ware Chadwell (and eight other wards in EH) there was no election at all.

Unfortunately results like those on Thurs make it harder and harder to get people involved in local politics.

Although, as you say, there were only three Conservatives, he beat one of them and pushed the others close, so would still have been elected had there been four.

He was significantly ahead of his party colleagues and I understand his vote was up, so his voters are clearly happy with him.

Even if you support the representative model of FPTP it makes no sense for each elector to represented by 3 councillors - either those 3 should be elected proportionally within the ward, or the ward should be subdivided such that each area returns only one councillor.

Whether the current system gets you a result you like or not it's pretty difficult to argue that this system is democratic.

This is not a a good democratic model at District level. There is no opposition; does anyone really think that a councillor is going to go against the wishes of the ruling executive. Who do you think is going to stand up for the ordinary voter and make their voice heard. In most cases the majority was quite overwhelming so even if the 'did not vote' people voted it would not make much difference because some of their votes might also be cast over the winning candidate.

I read the ongoing debates on Ware On-Line on Town, District and MP elections and quite animated, interesting and forthright they were. Quite refreshing because there was no such thing going on here. Apathy rules OK. Made no difference of course because the same result happened in Ware.

I have admit that I know fewer and fewer of the people who were elected in Hertford. Not to say they are not good people with the best interests of the community at heart. I do not know the answer to all this. Is this part of the world so good, so well off, so safe, so pleasant with none of life's problems busting in that there is nothing to fight against. I said here before that I had personal reasons for not standing and perhaps this was a bit of a blessing as I don't know how I would have coped had I been elected as a lone Independent with a stroppy point of view. But then again looking at the voting patterns perhaps I would not have won either. Nothing more to say apart from a deep sigh.
