Museum Look For Film
Hertford Museum are on the hunt for film of the town before the 1970s.

The film will form part of the museum's first floor display when it re-opens in 2010.

Anyone with footage that they are prepared to lend to the library should contact the curator Helen Gurney on 01992 582686.

Attempted Street Robbery
Police are appealing for information folllowing an assault in Hertford on the morning of Thursday 12th February.

The incident took place between 10am and 10.15am when a man was approached by an offender on Stanstead Road who asked him to hand over his mobile phone and money. The man said he would not hand anything over and walked away. A few moments later, the man was approached again a little further down the street by the offender, who struck him in the face.

As this happened a member of the public shouted at the offender to leave the man alone and approached him just after the assault to make sure he was okay. The offender then made off in an unknown direction.

The offender has been described as a white male, with brown hair in his twenties. He was reported to be wearing a blue t-shirt and jacket, and was said to have an aggressive sounding voice.

Investigating officer, PC Shelly Westwood, said: "We would like to speak to the member of the public who approached the victim to come forward as he could help us with our investigation".

"We would also ask anyone else who witnessed the incident or who has information to get in touch via the Hertfordshire Constabulary non-emergency number on 0845 33 00 222 citing crime reference numbers A1/09/422. Alternatively call Crimestoppers (an independent charity) anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Enquiry Dates Announced
The dates of the enquiry into the planned Tesco store in Ware road has been announced.

The Public Enquiry will open on Tuesday 26th May and is expected to last for five days, although a further three days have been reserved should they be required.

The enquiry will take place in The Council Chamber at Wallfields and anyone wishing to speak should be at the opening at 10am on the Tuesday.

No Plans Despite Plan
David Lloyd Leisure have confirmed that they have no plans to build a leisure centre at Archers Spring, despite seeking planning permission for the third time in ten years.

The District Council have approved a planning application by David Lloyd for a tennis centre incorporating indoor courts, pool, gym, and outdoor facilities including outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and golf range.

Plans for a tennis centre on the green belt site were first approved in 2001 after a public enquiry. Since then there has been no activity on the site.

FRIDAY 13th FEBRUARY 2009
Police Station Plan Refused
Redevelopment plans for the old police station site in Ware Road have been thown out by District Councillors.

Hertfordshire Police Authority and Local company ZOG were proposing to demolish the old police station building and construct 94 residential flats, 39 houses, an 80 bed hotel, an 80 bed nursing home, a small retail unit and a Primary Care Trust medical centre, together with underground surface and garage parking for 274 cars.

But at Wednesday's Development Control Sub-Committee meeting, councillors agreed with the planning officer's recommendation that planning permission should be refused.

Reasons for refusal included traffic issues, parking and the impact on the local infrastructure.

Care Home Goes Bust
The Malthouse Rest Home in Priory Street has gone into administration.



Vantis Business Recovery Systems were appointed as administrators on 27th January.

The care home will operate as normal whilst a buyer is sought for the business.

TUESDAY 10th FEBRUARY 2009
Wall Collapses
Hertford traffic was brought to a virtual standstill this morning following heavy rain overnight.

The westbound carriageway of Gascoyne way was closed for a time after part of a wall collapsed.



Police later opened the road to single lane traffic.

Elsewhere the town's rivers are swollen, with parts of the Lee threatening to breach it's banks after parts of the region had a month's rainfall in 24 hours.

Paint Throwers Hunted
Police are appealing for information and witnesses following an incident in Hertford in the early hours of Saturday 24th January.

At around 1.30am, the occupants of a car driving along St Andrew Street opened a window and threw an open tin of white paint at a group of men. The car, which is believed to be an Audi TT, was then driven off towards North Road.

A short time later, the car was driving in the opposite direction along St Andrew Street and a similar incident occurred. This time the paint was aimed at a separate group of men, at this time these men have not reported this incident to police.

Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Adrian Pomfrett said: "Firstly I would like to appeal to anyone who witnessed these incidents to contact police with information".

"From studying CCTV, we believe the car had been driven around the area for some time before these incidents and the headlights on occasions were turned off. If you believe you saw this vehicle before or after 1.30am, please call police with details".

"In relation to the two men who were targeted in the second incident, I would like to make a specific appeal to them to make contact. Their assistance could help us trace the offenders".

Yates Closes
Yates Menswear in Fore Street has closed after nine years in the town.

The small chain also has outlets in Epping and Billericay which remain open.

Yates also had a another outlet in Fore Street selling women's shoes, but this closed in 2006.

WEDNESDAY 4th FEBRUARY 2009
Subway Suspects Sought
Police are looking for two men in connection with a violent incident that took place in the early hours of Sunday 18th January outside Subway in The Wash.



A group of men and women became involved in a argument that spilled out into the street, resulting in a 32 year-old man sustaining injuiries.

PC Stephen Evans of Herts Police said: "We would like to speak to all the parties concerned to ascertain what happened that night".

"Did you witness this incident, are you featured in these pictures or do you recognise the people in the pictures?"

"If you can help, please call 0845 33 00 222 and quote crime reference A1/09/176."

Snow Causes Chaos
Schools are closed and cars have been abandoned after five inches of snow fell in the town last night.



Major roads were treacherous, although many motorists heeded warnings and stayed at home. Two articulated lorries were briefly stuck on the Ware Road.

Rail companies are warning that they cannot guarantee services this evening with further snow forecast throughout the day.

Heavy Snow On The Way
The Met Office are predicting a 60% chance of heavy snow over the next 24 hours.

Up to four inches of snow are likely, with some areas seeing as mch as a foot.

With the accompanying easterly wind, drifting may occur in places and travel on Monday is expected to be treacherous.
