Entertainment in HertfordDramaThere are two Dramatic Societies in Hertford - The Hertford Dramatic and Operatic Society, who regularly stage shows at The Castle Hall; and The Company Of Players who have their own small theatre in Balfour Street. MusicA number of pubs in the town have live music, principally The Sportsman. The Fledgling & Firkin and Seamus O'Donnels also have live music (of sorts). ArtHertford Art Society puts on an annual show at The Corn Exchange. Night ClubsThere are two Night Clubs in Hertford. Zeros can be found in Parliament Square and The Exchange takes place at The Corn Exchange in Fore Street.
Local Cinemas and TheatresThere is no cinema in Hertford but there are four nearby.
There is a theatre in Hertford - The Castle Hall, but there is no programme of events (see News below). However, there are a number of local theatres within reach that offer entertainment.
NewsHertford could have it's own local radio station by the year 2000. The town has been included in a list of towns for which The Radio Authority will be inviting tenders for radio stations at the beginning of 1999. A frequency between 106-107MHz will be advertised in January of next year, with bids closing in May. Plans for a four screen cinema in Mill Road, Hertford have been submitted to the local authority. If planning permission is granted work should begin in late 1998 or early 1999. The plans include a snooker hall and 14 lane bowling alley. East Herts District Council are currently conducting a survey to see how The Castle Hall in Hertford can be better utilised. At present the hall is little more than an amenity available for hire, but if the public response to the survey is positive there could be more live music, comedy shows and events similar to those offered by other local authority controlled theatres. |
